EXPLORING THE TERRITORY: WHY GEOGRAPHY AND BOLOGNA ARE PART OF THE EXPERIENCE
At Podere Cerbaia, we believe that understanding a place goes far beyond looking at a map. To truly know a territory, one must study its geography—the invisible lines that connect history, culture, and landscape. This week, our “geographic” gaze turns North. A map is necessary to help our orientation, but it ignores more than what is says. On a map, the path between Firenze and Bologna is ‘just’ a line and a fast train gets you from A to B in 40 minutes, but the cultures of the two cities are immensely different as much as they have been linked through the centuries.

What Lies North of Florence?
While at Podere Cerbaia you focus on the rolling hills of Chianti or the rural pace, a magnificent complement to such experience lies just across the Apennine Mountains. If you travel North of Florence, you will find a city that is impossible to miss: Bologna. Accessible in just over an hour, Bologna (known as La Grassa for its food and La Dotta for its university, La Rossa for its bricks) offers a vibrant contrast to the rural peace of our country home. Its red-brick porticos and medieval towers are the perfect urban contrast of your Tuscan stay. Bologna e i suoi tre nomi: la dotta, la rossa, la grassa – Turismo Bologna
Exploring Bologna includes a walk along its 40 kilometers of UNESCO-protected porticos, a visit the bustling markets, and perhaps even stop by the ARCA school to see where the magic of language learning happens in the city.
Don’t miss to explore the University district: Bologna Alma Mater studiorum is the oldest University in Europe – perhaps in the world! And it started as Studium Iuris: what is today called a Law Faculty.

A Special Connection for Ilaria
Our passion for geography isn’t just theoretical—it’s personal. Ilaria is currently pursuing her second degree in Geography at the University of Bologna. Your Italian Home in Chianti Away from Home | Podere Cerbaia
With her academic expertise and passion for the land, Ilaria embodies our mission of learning by doing. While she dives deep into the academic study of territories and landscapes, she also collaborates with the ARCA Italian Language School in Bologna. Her work bridges the gap between the formal study of the Italian language and the physical reality of the Italian land, creating a unique agriturismo language study environment where words and soil meet.
